Highlights

The General Study Program (GSP) was initiated by Canadian National Education Exchange Centre (CNEEC) in early 1999. This comprehensive program offers multiple benefits to Chinese students and their families, as well as to Chinese and Canadian universities by:

● Providing Chinese students living in China with adequate time to build language proficiency and develop Western, learning strategies

●  Helping students gain insight into Canadian universities’ educational methodologies and curriculum guidelines, while easing their educational and cultural transitions

● Allowing students to select their major subjects and Canadian universities that best suit their interests after two years of study in China

● Making the program more affordable to Chinese families than the prevalent, four-year-abroad programs

● Working exclusively with Canadian materials expanding the scope of Chinese, pedagogical techniques

● Establishing further bridges for promoting international, educational exchanges

● Enabling Canadian universities to generate more revenue from receiving international students

● Giving Chinese students opportunities to become more mature and adaptable through gradual familiarity with the Canadian, educational system, thereby reducing their need for advising and tutorial time while in Canada

The program was launched at Shandong University and Southwest Jiaotong University in 2001 and 2002, respectively.  Both universities offer first and second-year undergraduate courses focusing on two disciplines and 30 majors: Engineering & Science, and Economics & Commerce. After students complete their two years of study in China, they are eligible to pursue third and fourth year studies in Canadian universities bringing a maximum of 60 transferable, recognized credits. The University of Toronto, McGill University, Queen’s University, the University of British Columbia are participants in this program.  Since 2001, there have been more than 1,160 full-time students enrolled, including 348 students who successfully entered about 30 universities across Canada September 2009. One outstanding student, Xiaoxi Lin won a $22,500 scholarship from the University of Alberta in 2007. After over ten years of CNEEC’s hard, dedicated work, this program has achieved an exceptional reputation in China and among the Canadian universities.

CNEEC will continue to work closely with Chinese and Canadian universities to support the prospective Chinese students.
